Club Championships 2009
Following on from the very successful County Championships held at the Club, during which the Course record was broken on two occasions and Filton’s Ollie Hooper finished in fourth place, hopes were high that this years Club Championship would be a highly competitive affair. The 2008 Champion, Paul Ryder, after a disappointing performance in the County Championship, had something to prove to the up and coming members after his crown. In the event, the nett competition, for the President’s Cup proved to be the most closely fought, with Simon Wellstead the ultimate winner on 134, after two nett 67’s, just holding off the challenges of Leslie Willett, who finished with a nett 64 and Roy Braithwaite.
The Club Champion though proved to be Paul Ryder, who absolutely spreadeagled the field with a gross 134, including a first round 65, which equalled the Course record set in the County Championship by Chris Lloyd and Ollie Glaze. In 2nd and 3rd spots were two other members who performed creditably in the County Championship, Ceri Fearnley (143) and Liam Mitchell (146).
The Ladies Championship, held concurrently, saw a new Ladies Champion in Becky Angell, whilst Mel Lear took the nett prize after shooting a nett 61 in the 1st round.
Further highlights of Filton’s Centenary year include a nine day Festival of Golf, starting on Saturday 4 July. This features Open events on the Monday, Wednesday and Friday, which are already proving popular with golfers in the area, judging by the amount of interest being shown and the entries coming in. On August 23, the Club is running a Centenary Foursomes competition, for both Scratch and handicap pairs, commemorative silver medals will be awarded to the gross winners and Bristol Blue goblets to the best nett scorers. A West Region PGA Pro-Am, the only one in Bristol, is another high profile event that is scheduled.
