The Open Daryl played first qualifying round for the Open today at Effingham GC and we all wish him the best of luck. Check out his scoring here.
Paul Ryder is the 2008 Club Champion. Paul has won this big event now 5 times and played very well in very hot conditions scoring 144 over the two rounds. The course was in fantastic condition and was playing very well indeed with the wonderful weather we had. Congratulations to Paul and to all that competed. Please see the results page for listings.
New Course Record- Oliver Hooper has claimed a new course record and also clinched the title of the Open Championships whilst doing it. Well Done Oli.

Filton Forum
Captain 2008 - Gary Duke

As you will all be aware the course is in very fine condition due to the very hard works completed by our dedicated green staff. I would like to personally thank Marcus and his staff particularly for their super efforts to present the course for my captain’s charity golf day on the 16 May. The kind messages and thank you calls that I have received since then have congratulated us on the condition of the course, our service and our facilities. We may win some new members as a result.
More of that wonderful event a bit later.
The first bank holiday mixed greensomes competition held on the 5th May brought out another good number of our members who enjoyed the event immensely. The eventual winners of division two were Chris and Kathie Foran with 38 points, John Ireland and Maureen hatch in second place with 30 points coming second on count back. In division one Barry Wilcox and Esme Mannering came first with 36 points with me and our lady captain Judith Brain in the prizes again at second place with 35 points again on count back. These events really are good fun and I hope for an even better field for the bank holidays to come.
The first Texas scramble held on Saturday 25th May was a bit of a wash out due to bad weather, we had four hardly players complete the course and I would guess that they feel they have won hands down. Sorry not so lucky chaps this competition will be re-scheduled to a later date in the year.
The Doug Lockyer memorial trophy mixed competition due to take place on Monday 26th May was unfortunately cancelled due to the exceptionally bad weather; this will also be re-scheduled to later in the year.
Returning to my charity golf day. The entire event went off very well with some 140 players enjoying a very good day of golf and fun in the sunshine. I have to sincerely thank my wife, my daughter, her best friend, my sister in law and my wife’s best friend for their sterling efforts to feed the players at the halfway house which this year (after our own facility was wrecked by arson) was located on the patio. We changed the course around with players starting off the 10th tee; which made the spectacle of Daryl our professional on his knees challenging all players to out drive him even more enjoyable.
Daryl raised the princely sum of £960 for my charity and I offer my sincere thanks to him for this outstanding contribution. I hope that your knees are getting better.
More thanks are of course due to Julia and her staff at the bar and in the kitchen for their hard work in keeping everyone happy and well fed. Thanks also to our secretary Trevor and his assistant Linda for their huge efforts in making the whole day go so smoothly. Thanks to Andy Chivers for getting the scores to appear on our new plasma TV, this made a huge difference to the day and created a great deal of interest as players finished their rounds. Thanks to Jim Henderson for his booking in desk and of course to our course Marshalls in getting everyone off the tenth in timely fashion. Thanks to Graham “The Bear” Maggs for his outstanding efforts.
To all of those members and guests who took part on the day and to those who provided me with many items to raffle and auction, I extend my sincere thanks for your contributions as the entries and items provided helped raise the total on the day to a figure close to £7,500. My charity the New Siblands School in Thornbury are truly delighted and have requested that I offer their sincere thanks everyone concerned. The figure raised so far will go a very long way towards their much needed total which will help them in their bid for a very large sum of money from a government charity.
“I just knew that Filton would come through as you do every year”
The next high profile date for my year will be captain’s day on the 29th June when I again hope to reverse the course; we will be holding a barbeque at the half way rest station on the patio. I look forward to seeing many members there on that day; hopefully the weather can be a little kinder to us than it was this bank holiday weekend.
Finally I would like to wish everyone a great golfing year at Filton

Seniors
Seniors Captain 2008 - Trevor Thompson

The April highlight was Trevors Captains Away Day at Tall Pines. This proved to be a great success and everyone I spoke to thoroughly enjoyed an excellent day of golf on an interesting course. There were lots of prizes and a very good meal and speeches. Two things stick in my mind, one was Bill Gray winning the individual prize with 40 plus points, and the other was, why dont we play there in our Seniors matches? (Aeroplanes? What aeroplanes)
Once again May has given us a few drops of rain, but this time we haven't suffered any match cancellations as a result of it and have been able to play all our scheduled matches. Trevor has managed, sometimes by the skin of his teeth, to field full teams. He asked me to include the following in the hope of attracting more newcomers to seniors inter-club match golf.
Teams are selected on a rotational basis, everyone who enters their name and is then selected are picked irrespective of form or handicap. The principal object is participating in the best tradition of seniors golf. If a player wins, well done.. If the player should be on the losing side, then I hope they have had a good match and made new friends. We like to win, but it is not the end of the earth if we lose.
Here are the more recent results: St Pierre and Shirehampton (away), lost, Chipping Sodbury (home), our first win of the season, (hurrah) followed by Saltford at home, who we also beat, losing none of the individual matches and only halving one-almost a whitewash.. We lost at Cotswold Edge by the same margin that we beat Saltford and then halved our home match with Knowle who, I am happy to say, this year managed to field a full team for us. We lost at Henbury and also Kendleshire, by the smallest possible margin, won at home against St Pierre and, in our last match in May, lost at Cotswold Hills. I discovered on talking to the Cotswold Hills Captain, that they have an abundance of applications for every match, so come on chaps, join the happy wanderers..
Other competitions have been progressing, with Jim Powell winning the Winter Eclectic, well done, Jim. Our over 55's Open is due on 12 June, which will be our first Seniors' major of the year.
I must also say that the work on the greens that we all moaned about when we seemed to be putting on washboards, has paid off and we now have our usual immaculate greens again. Well done Marcus and his men...
I'll finish by wishing all our walking wounded, (latest recruit, John Lewis), a speedy recovery; see you all on the course sometime soon I hope.
Ladies
Ladies Captain 2008 - Judith Brain

We are now well in to the season and lots of competitive golf has been played.
In the 3rd round of the Mail on Sunday Classic, Filton narrowly lost to Bowood 3 games to 2 and we lost in our Daily Mail Foursomes match at Forest Hills.
Our Alliance Scratch Foursomes pairing lost on the 18th to Thornbury at Orchardleigh. However the Alliance Handicap Foursome pair, Sue Bindon and Josie Peirce, continued their successful run with a win at Knowle against Lansdown. They now go into the Quarter-finals, meeting Bristol and Clifton at Orchardleigh. Best wishes to both.
The winners of the Vie Davis Cup for the best Filton pair in the Mixed Open were Ginny and Pete Peachey.
For the Ladies Open, with good weather, we welcomed visitors from 13 clubs and received many compliments from them regarding the excellent condition and standard of the course. Congratulations to Ginny Peachey for winning the Filton Cup with a nett score of 72. We now look forward to the Ladies Club Championship, Alliance and Friendly matches still to be played and hopefully more good news!!

You should all by now have noticed that the club are offering a carvery lunch on (usually) alternate Sunday lunch times. These are proving very popular and, at only £6.95 a head, are extremely good value as anyone who has experienced them will testify. Due to their popularity, to be sure of getting in you need to pre-book, or you are likely to be disappointed! The carvery dates are all advertised on the notice board, or please call the clubhouse for more details and to book on: 01179692021.
The social event calendar has now been drawn up for the rest of the year and we need all members to support them to make them a success. Cross Country Golf and Pig Roast are set for Sat July 26th, so please book early to avoid dissapointment. Please click images below to enlarge.
If you have other ideas that you would like to see us try, please contact myself, Trevor, or any other member of the House and Social Committee. (Andrew Chivers, Jim Henderson, Julia, Joy Woodman, or Alan Barclay).
A Date for your Diaries
Cross-Country Golf followed by Julia's Pig Roast. Saturday 26 July 2008. Keep an eye open for the notices.
Centenary 2009
Alan Barclay
The main news to impart this time is the agreement that we have signed with other clubs, that were formed in 1909, to allow any participating club's members the opportunity of playing on other participating clubs courses absolutely free from 1 January 2009. In most cases all the 23 clubs that have signed up to the scheme intend that this arrangement should continue indefinitely. I am sure you will agree that this is a great perk to have as a club member and I know that there will be plenty of our members looking forward to playing some of these courses. Obviously there are controls, you can't expect to spend your summer holidays in Weymouth and get free golf every day for example, but as long as no-one tries to abuse the system it is a nice little bonus for being a Filton member.
We have produced a mug with the Filton Centenary crest on it, available as shown behind the bar in the club house, or in porcelain. If you would like to have one (or more) please order them at the bar, with payment, and I will place an order when I can put a sizeable one together. The price is £5 per mug.
Also don't go buying your 2009 calendar from anyone else, the Filton Centenary calendar will be available in a few weeks. It will have seasonal views of the course, space for appointments and dates of Centenary year events - not to be missed!
You may have some thoughts of your own and would like to discuss these with us, please feel free. If you want to contact me by email below.
2009 will be a year when you can proudly say “I am a member of Filton Golf Club”
