Ceri Fearnley Earns The Title Club Champion 2012

June 10 , 2012

Club Champs 2012

The Clubs Championships actually took place on Saturday with some horrific storms and relentless rain in the days leading up to Filtons main event of the year.

A huge thank you to Marcus and his green staff for getting the course ready and delivering yet again a truly magnificent track.

Saturdays conditions were very tough indeed even without the rain, and the high winds made scoring very hard with only 3 players shooting under par. The score of the day had to come from Luke Derrick scoring a incredible 69 with Ceri Fearnley one behind. Mitch Waite and Jonny Doidge got it to 74 to make it into the finals groupings on Sunday.

Sunday started off really nice for the early players but come lunchtime the rain started to pour and gradually worsened through to early evening again making playing conditions tricky.

Only one person could take the title and this would go to someone who could keep their nerve and play solid golf. Ceri Fearnley played a solid round of golf finishing off with a very credible 74 taking the Club Championships.

Very well done to the juniors who played some fantastic golf over the weekend to prove that junior golf at Filton Golf Club is thriving. Congratulations to Ceri who has worked very hard indeed leading up to this season and with battling through some very serious injuries earlier in the year he truly deserves this victory.

Top Ten:
Ceri Fearnley 70 + 74 = 144
Luke Derrick 69 + 77 = 146
Mitch Waite 74 + 73 = 147
Paul Ryder 81 + 69 = 150
Duncan E Smith 76 + 74 = 150
Jonny Doidge 74 + 77 = 151
Christopher J Baker 77 + 76 = 153
Andrew Wood 76 + 77 = 153
Paul Hotchkiss 82 + 74 = 156
Matthew Carter 80 + 76 = 156

Filton Juniors Win at Knowle

April 05 , 2012

A team of 3 Filton Juniors travelled to Knowle Golf Club on a breezy Thursday 5th April morning to take part in the Bristol & District Junior Team Trophy, the Alexander Trophy.

20 Teams from the local area clubs took part on this grey day. Mitch Waite was first out for Filton drawing the early 8:30 start, followed by George Boyes & George Hilliam bring up the rear at just after 10:00. Scoring through day (mainly morning) was quite tricky and the overall results were close.

With 2 from 3 to count the top ended up, in third Long Ashton by virtue of a worse third card than second placed Chipping Sodbury, But with a three point winning margin in first place were the Boys from Filton !! This included a magnificent 44 point total from George Hilliam, the best male individual score.

Congratulations to the boys and a great start to the golfing year for Filton Golf Club.

Seniors Past Captain - Charity Update - Bill Gray

March 26, 2012

Logan Gray was born on Nov 17th 2010 at Southmead Maternity Unit, However he was meant to arrive about 12th February 2011!! He was three months premature and weighed 1lb 8oz. He spent his first five and a half months in intensive care where only his parents could touch him! Because of that I decided my charity last year would be the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). At the end of my term - thanks to a great group of Seniors - I had collected a staggering amount of £1,100!!

Geoff Anderson Drives in as Club Captain 2012

January 01, 2012

Geoff Anderson was installed as Club captain 2012 and seen here 2nd from left playing alongside Daryl kelley our club Professional, David Cottrell our Vice captain and Gary Duke our club Chairman.

Geoff's drive measured 147 yards which under the circumstances was not a bad distance given that poor old Geoff was suffering a little after the previous nights celebrations. Our best wishes to both Geoff and david on their season ahead.

As you will know it is customary for the captain to support a charity during their period of captaincy, to this end I have chosen The National Autistic Society. Link

Autism is much more common than most people think. There are over half a million people in the UK with autism. Together with their families they make up over two million people whose lives are touched by autism every single day. Despite this, autism is still relatively unknown and misunderstood. This means that many of these two million people get nothing like the level of help they need. It is a lifelong condition; children with autism grow up to be adults with autism.

Filton Juniors Claim Both Team Trophies

August 01 , 2011

Filtons Junior Open was a huge success and the course and weather was fantastic. We also introduced two new team trophies this year with a gross and nett prizes being The maurice Stagg Trophy and The 1909 Cup.

The shock of the day was that one of the Filton teams actually won both gross and nett trophies. Congratulations to Mitch Waite, George Boyes and Luke Derrick on their success in our first team year.

George Boyes didn't stop there, in fact he also took the Filton nett Cup and the Open nett cup, so congratulations to him. The Open gross was won by Knowles Louis O'Reagan.

We also held a flag competition for our Academy members where they played off the blue tees and had a maximum number of shots, which when completed they put a flag in the ground. The furthest flag winning. Joe Waite won, with Mason waite in second place and Mackenzie Chivers coming third. This was a massive success and will be planning more of these through the end of this season.

Thank you to all the helpers on the day and to all of our competitors, and hope to see you all back next year.

Golf & Club Mark Awards

July 29 , 2011

Filton Golf club were awarded the Golf Mark High Achiever Award. Andrew Chivers, Chairman of the Junior Committee commented that “over the last 15 months the Junior Committee worked hard and pushed for the highest standards that we could possibly achieve. As a Club the philosophy has changed and members now see the junior members as a crucial part of the Club’s strategy to increase its membership in the years ahead".

The numerous courses and form filling along with implementing new procedures into the golf club has not been easy, and of course we have been very fortunate to have so many willing members at the golf club wanting to help and give up their free time to become part of the Junior/Academy team, in what has been one of the many great success stories at Filton Golf Club.

With guidance from our PGA Teaching Pro who oversees the coaching sessions, we were able to form a new Academy membership and without any advertising it was an instant success. This accreditation is testament to the hard work that the Junior Committee and Golf Club have put into providing a safer, securer and friendlier environment where junior golfers and academy members can learn to play golf and have some fun. The Junior Committee feels very proud of this achievement and with this high accolade we can keep moving forward building a secure future for Filton Golf Club.

Aerospace Golf Day 2011

June 29 , 2011

The 2011 battle for the Sir George White Trophy, a stableford competition between teams of four from Filton Golf Club and others from the local aerospace companies, was won this year by a team from BAe Systems.

The competition started in 2009 as part of our Centenary year celebrations and commemorates over 100 years of shared history. Many notable figures from the aero comanies have been members of the golf club over the years, some playing a large part in our development. Bristol Aeroplane Company owned the land on which the course was built from 1945 until 1966, when it was taken over by Rolls-Royce, the club buying the land in 1979. Were it not for BAC,and the support it gave us on several occasions, Filton Golf Club as we know it would not exist today.

The trophy itself is a limited edition bronze figure of the great philanthropist and entrepreneur Sir George White, founder of the BAC. It was produced to mark the centenary of aerospace at Filton and donated by Rolls- Royce for this competition.

The winning team comprised Andy Wescott, Jagjit Sidhu, John Pugh and Tim Harcombe. They won on countback from one of the golf club teams lead by Geoff Anderson our Vice-Captain, which also included messrs Atkinson, Cooke and Howell.

Liam Mitchell Grabs Club Championships

June 12 , 2011

Liam Mitchell is our new Club Champion of 2011. The Saturday was a fantastic day for golf, but with blustery winds and a very well groomed course meant no one was going to run away with a low number. Liam carded a first round 72 to take the lead going into day two with Paul Ryder securing a 74 showing a very respectful defence of his title.

The Sunday was a very different day indeed with heavy rain which didnt want to go away leaving the competition officials with no choice but to make it a 19 hole competition. Andy Moore took best nett carding a 75 net 66.

Kelley shows them the best way around Wedmore

April 27 , 2011

Reigning G&S PGA Strokeplay Champion warmed up for the defence of his title by winning the final 18 hole Medal of the season at the Isle of Wedmore. It was the first ever G&S PGA event to be hosted by the club and Kelley struggled to find the venue after following the commands of his sat nav which took him on a scenic route through the Somerset countryside. Once he had found the golf course there was no stopping him as he recorded a 4 under par 66 to win by 3 strokes from Mark Sanders. Read More

Bill Gray Drives In His Season In As Seniors Captain 2011

March 10 , 2011

A cup of tea was the drink of the day considering how cold the wind was blowing into on the first hole that day. Bill did his best to battle the chilling wind and drive in his year as Seniors Captain 2011. We also played the Seniors V The Staff that day as it was cancelled due to the poor weather in December.

It was a great day and it was really nice to get the seniors together with the satff and enjoy some competitive golf. The staff won by 7 holes, but some more importantly some friendships were made. Cant wait to do it again next year.

Geoff Endicott Drives In His Season In As Club Captain

January 08, 2011

Geoff Endicott Drove In his seaosn as club Captain today, and golf was played in the best weather we have had on a Captain's Drive In for many year now. Geoff would like to thank all those who were at my installation evening on Friday 7th and those who supported my Drive-in on Saturday 8th . Much to my amazement and that of everyone I play with, I managed to hit the left side of the fairway.Geoff's chosen Charities, which are the choice of Esme Mannering (Ladies Captain) as well.

We read everyday of the tragedies that our troops experience in places like Afghanistan and the suffering both they and their families have to put up with. Both Esme and I feel that it is fitting therefore that we should try to do something to raise some funds to help. So we have chosen Help for Heroes.

We also wanted to choose something local that we could support and decided that, given the work that it does for the terminally ill and the support for their families, St Peters Hospice would be the choice.

Daryl Dashes To Victory At Cleeve Hill

November 24, 2010

Reigning G&S PGA Strokeplay Champion Daryl Kelley from Filton faced a tricky decision as the final Medal of 2010 at Cleeve Hill approached. Did he play at a course he rates amongst his favourites or should he stay close to home where his wife is due to give birth to their first child at any time? Luckily for him he chose the former as he claimed victory with an excellent round of 68, 4 under par and then returned home to continue the wait for Kelley junior’s arrival with some funds to buy some nappies!....Read More...

The semi finals between Bristol & Clifton & Filton & Henbury & Lilley Brook resulted in close wins for Filton & Henbury, a repeat of last years final!. The 3rd/4th play-off was won by Lilley Brook. The final itself was played in great spirit with Filton winning matches 1 & 2 & Henbury winning match 3.
