Visitors & Societies

Filton Golf Club is a private member's club that welcomes non-members to experience the challenge of the course and pleasant ambience of the clubhouse. Play for non-members at weekends is only possible as a guest of a member. We ask for the sight of a current handicap certificate or evidence of golfing ability and expect all golfers to conform to the normal standards of dress and conduct. We accept county cards and 2Fore1 vouchers subject to times of time events, competitions and matches.

The clubhouse provides excellent facilities. Comfortable and relaxing, it is very well-appointed internally with extremely good changing rooms with lockers for visitors. The bar, lounge and dining room are tastefully decorated and comfortable and look out onto the first fairway and the putting green. The food is excellent and offers good value whilst the range of liquid refreshment is extensive!

Westward Ho

This hole may seem quite straight forward when you stand on the tee, but it takes a very accurate shot to keep it on the short stuff to make certain of making the green in regulation. Many will try and take it on with a driver and come unstuck in one of the many traps guarding this small green. So take a long iron up the middle and then a wedge into the green will make sure you walk off this hole with a smile on your face and a birdie or par on your medal card.

Corner

With a fairway sloping left to right it is important to nail your drive down the left side. You have also opened up the green from here and it all runs away from you. Pitch a nice easy iron into a large green, but make sure you're faced with an uphill putt rather than a very tricky down-hiller. In dry conditions you will watch your ball run right off it.

Rannoch

A good drive is a must down Rannoch as you can get blocked out by a rank of trees on the left and a push shot will see you in the wet. Keep it on the short stuff to get a good shot into the green, which has traps both sides. Find yourself in the rough either side and it's going to be tricky to get your ball to stop. Usually an easy par hole.

Bowling Green

Bowling Green is a tricky little par 3. Simple in calm conditions, but get a breeze blowing and you will be in between club. Run 1 into the front of the green and eliminate the two traps guarding this narrow green, but beware- this green might be narrow but can certainly leave you with a very long putt if you under-club.

Long Hill

Walk off here with a 6 and you're happy! The drive is the key here to making anything respectable. Keep it up the left to avoid a canyon of trees blocking your path to the green. Driver, rescue or 3- wood and you'll be putting for birdie. It's a Mackenzie green so make sure you hit into the right level, as coming back down from the top you may find yourself reaching for the wedge again.

Highfields

Looks easy doesn't it? As long as you pick enough club to get over the trees on the right you will be okay. My advice is to bang one down the left with a 3- wood; take driver and you could end up in trouble and see yourself taking a drop out of the ditch. Be careful with club choice here as it always plays shorter than the yardage and the last thing you want is to be out the back of this green. The green slopes left to right big time so make sure you're putting uphill.

Dog leg

Easy to take a 6 here if your not a confident driver and stroke an iron down the middle. A 3 wood or rescue down the left can put you in prime position to attack this two level green. Make sure you have checked the pin on this baby whilst your on the 6th tee, because if you leave yourself blocked out down the right your going to need to know where you hitting. do not over run this green on the left as there is a hidden trap lying in wait.

Oval

Double check your yardage as this green is like fortknocks - Traps everywhere. and a block push can see you in the lake. Again this is no breeze, cos when you got one your in between 3 or 4 bats. A few slopes in this green can easily give you a miss read so have a good look and commit to your line.

Ridges

Hole 9 is a big ask off the whites, and with water up the right and OOB up the left you have to fully commit to your drive. Take your line up the left as the fairway will kick your ball over to the right and into trees. The green is guarded by bunkers left and right. Always remember to try and check the pin on this green before you go out - its a tricky one to judge when your back on the fairway.

White tree

Okay, let's not go crazy here. Depending on how the front nine was you have to beware of White Tree. Water down the right - it's a real magnet, so maybe take a long iron or punch a rescue down there. No heroics here so just aim for the marker post at the back of the green and get it on. A tough hole in the wind and to avoid a telephone number on the card and play it as a par 5.

Drop

The Drop is a very picturesque hole and on arrival looks very straight forward. But don't be fooled. This hole can play anything from a wedge in calm weather or up to a 6-iron in windy conditions, and get caught up in one of the two traps and you'll be lucky to walk off with bogey let alone par.

Blackberry Hill

It all runs away to the left up Blackberry Hill and the line is up the right-hand side with a touch of draw. The hole is short though so you can take a mid-iron for safety then give yourself a wedge or 9-iron into a flat green. It's a blind shot into this green with a trap on the left so make sure to take advantage of the marker post. An easy par hole so there's a chance for a birdie here.

Avenue

Avenue is the second-hardest hole on the course here, so although it looks easy, this little baby's a real sleeper. Your line is up the right-hand side and be careful not to overcook it as you can easily find yourself knocking it out of the trees down the left. Don't be between club's on this hole, just pull out the longer of the two and stroke it home. Not an easy putt on this green and you will then work out why this it is an index 2 on the card. You've done well if you walk off with a par here.

Barn

Big guns at the ready here. A real picture off the back tees. Down the middle I'm afraid so you really have to commit yourself to this drive if you want to make par or have the chance at a birdie. If you swing it well and the wind is kind you can muscle a rescue home here. There are traps both sides and a free-drop zone at the back just in case it goes off in your hands. It is hard work down here, so start thinking on this hole and respect it.

Pen Park

Pen Park has changed and has been now lengthened to 132 yards. Pen Park has now become a real challenge. You'll need anything from a 7-iron in strong winds to a wedge in calm conditions. Traps guard this green at the front, but make sure not to hit too long as you can easily fly out the back. Not an easy birdie hole anymore.

Pond

The pond tee is set right back, begging you to pull out the big stick and let rip. Beware of the pond on the left within driving distance. If you have a good card going play the captain's bat and get on the green in two. Walk off here with a par and you can be very pleased with yourself.

Chestnut

Chestnut is the start of two very tiring finishing holes. Play this down the left to put yourself in a good position to get onto the green in regulation. You will be hitting into a two-tear green so make sure you know where the flag is first. This green is guarded by two traps which can easily ruin a good card.

Hump Back

This hole is a beauty off the back tees and looks a real stunner in the height of summer. Out of bounds up the left, it takes nerves of steel to commit to one up here and keep yourself from tearing up your score card. Eighteen is undoubtedly a real sleeper. Too short off the tee and you're in no-mans-land with a blind shot into an heavily guarded two-tear green and trees down both sides of the fairway. Walk off here with a par, you've done very well indeed.
